Leo Erken (1964) is an Amsterdam based photographer and film maker.

He studied photography at the AKI Art Academy in Enschede, the Netherlands, from 1983 till 1988. As a student, he travelled on numerous occasions to Poland and other countries in the former communist bloc. After graduating in 1988, he continued to follow the developments in eastern Europe and covered the revolutions in Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary for Dutch national newspapers. In 1991, he moved his work area to the former Soviet Union, visiting more than fifty times such countries as Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Chechnya and Georgia.
Besides his travels he worked in the Netherlands on various photography and art projects. In the late nineties he partly moved to documentary film making.
